Welcome

I’m Ailsa — a Psychologist, Counsellor/Psychotherapist, and Creative Arts Therapist based in the High Peak, at the top end of the beautiful Peak District, UK. I bring both lived experience and over a decade of clinical practice to my work with individuals, groups, and organisations.
About Me
Before embarking on therapy, training, or any professional relationship, it’s important that you can get a genuine sense of who you’ll be working with and whether they feel like the right fit for your needs. I’ve shared plenty of information below to help you get to know me and my approach, but you’re always welcome to get in touch if there’s something more you’d like to ask.
What I'm like to work with
A central aim in my practice is that you feel safe, respected, and in control. I actively work to equalise power dynamics, offer genuine choice in how we “do therapy,” and adapt the process to suit you.
People often describe me as open‑minded, curious, and non‑judgemental. I’m also very down to earth; I don’t hide behind a professional mask or baffle you with jargon. While I’ve worked hard to develop deep professional skills, I won’t position myself as an out‑of‑touch “expert.” You are the expert on your own life, and therapy works best when we’re real with one another and build an authentic relationship.
Professional Background
I have 10+ years’ experience across community counselling services, the NHS, charities, educational settings, sports and exercise contexts, mental health and social care, and I established my Private Practice in 2017.
I also teach and research in counselling and psychotherapy, therapy ethics and human rights, behaviour/lifestyle change, health psychology, sport, performance & music psychology, and expressive/creative arts therapies. My research includes 20+ peer‑reviewed publications, establishing the concept of Creative Therapeutic Flow, and I co‑originated Arts for the Blues—an evidence‑based creative psychological therapy now used in NHS and other settings.
